Module One
tools of the trade

In this module you will meet your new best friend: the pointed pen! We will cover how to use a dip pen, select a nib, find a favorite ink, select the right paper, and learn from historical examples.

Module Two
lowercase letters

In this module you will learn the heart of the Copperplate script and how some of the smallest details will make the biggest difference in the outcome of your lettering. We cover basic strokes, lowercase letters, connecting strokes, and writing words.

Module Three
uppercase letters

There are countless ways to script Copperplate capitals - it's something I love about the script!

In this module you will learn a traditional example and also how to train your eye to script other variations on your own.

Chantelle

I've had a calligraphy pen in my hand since I was 14 years old so you can trust I am 10,000% in love with the art of pen and ink. Having walked the path you are on, I've made all the rookie mistakes myself. I've learned, unlearned, and relearned techniques that eventually lead me into a profession of working with luxury brands and clients for the past ten years.

As a member of the International Association of Master Penmen Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting (IAMPETH), I've been privileged to take classes with many of the best penmen (and women) in the world and have had the honor to teach thousands of students in both online and in-person classes. It's one of my greatest joys to guide students towards excellence in their pursuit of breathtakingly beautiful calligraphic script!

Is this course suitable for beginners with no prior calligraphy experience?

Absolutely! This course is designed with beginners in mind. I'll take you step by step through the fundamentals, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable learning experience.
Will I have full access to the course right away or is it released over time? How long will I be able to view the lessons?

This course is self-paced, allowing you to learn at your convenience. You will have access to all of the course content at once (pace yourself!!). You'll have access to the course materials and instructions for the lifetime of the course (including any course updates), so you can progress through the lessons at a pace that suits your schedule be that 4 weeks or 4 years.
What materials will I need for the course?

You'll need a calligraphy pen holder, nibs, ink, smooth paper, and a comfortable workspace. We'll provide you with a detailed list of recommended supplies at the beginning of the course, so you're well-prepared to dive into your calligraphy journey. We've created a list with John Neal Books for easy shopping. For those who would like a ready-made kit, check out the Starter Kit or the Deluxe Kit on our SHOP page. These kits come with a penholder, nibs, ink, dinky dips and stand, and the full 70+ page workbook print out. A Deluxe Pen option is also available
I've taken modern calligraphy classes in the past. Will this course be different?

Yes, indeed. If you have prior experience with modern calligraphy it can be a benefit to you since you may already familiar with using a pointed pen to create thick and thin strokes. However this course will offer a unique focus on the traditional elements of consistency, nib control, and precision to give a completely different look to your letters. Modern and Copperplate really are two very different scripts that use some of the same tools & techniques.
Will I need to unlearn my fountain pen techniques to embrace calligraphy?

If you've taken some Montblanc classes with me, rest assured, in this course you'll be able to take your existing skills and build upon them. You won't need to unlearn anything; instead, you'll find a guided transition that bridges your fountain pen expertise with the world of dip pen calligraphy. The goal isn't to start from scratch, but to enhance your abilities with a fresh artistic perspective with the tool of a dip pen to really help you achieve the next level in your beautiful scripting.
Will you be correcting my homework or providing direct feedback?

Students are invited to participate in quarterly LIVE Q&A sessions for a year. You'll be able to submit your questions ahead of time and can also provide your worksheets if you'd like me to provide feedback for others to benefit from as well (anonymous or not...you choose). While it's not likely that I will be able to get to everyone's worksheets, if you encounter any specific hiccups along the way you can always send me an email and I'm happy to help.
What if I have questions or need help during the course?

I'm here for you. We have multiple ways to get your questions answered. 1) Our online course group page. You can ask questions there directly and get a quick response. 2) You will be invited to quarterly Q&A sessions ensure you're always on track. 3) Additionally, if it's a more urgent question, you can email me at info@bespokestrokes.com and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.
